Meredith kept her mother’s decline a secret for a long time, but it didn’t keep her from having to reckon with and try to live up to her workaholic, emotionally unavailable mother’s enduring legacy. She’s technically died once and almost died several more times, and she’s lost enough people to put her in a permanent state of grief.
Meredith and Derek intended to get married at city hall but found they had no time due to Izzie’s surgery and the John Doe patient. So they chose to get married by writing their vows on a post-it note. They stated that they’d love each other, even when they hated each other; that they would never walk away and that they would care for each other when they were old, senile and smelly. Izzie thinks they have a relationship until she catches him in bed with George’s ex-girlfriend, Olivia. Their new relationship hit a snag with the arrival of his famous and unstable father, who Andrew didn’t want to turn out like.

Just after Derek returns to Addison, Meredith decides to adopt a dog. Eventually, she and Derek share the dog, but before that can happen, the dog played a large part in keeping them from getting back together.

Even until the very end, they both relied on the note whenever they were fighting. When Derek moved away for a job in D.C., the note became an even more significant aspect of their relationship. In the season one finale, his past eventually catches up with him when his estranged wife Addison moves to Seattle and is offered a position by Dr. Webber. Shortly after that, his childhood best friend Mark joins Seattle Grace as the new head of plastic surgery.
